CONCORD — Jefferson County commuters to and from Milwaukee and Waukesha counties will be finding life a bit more challenging in the coming days after a dump truck struck the Highway E bridge over Interstate 94 near Concord.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Wisconsin State Patrol, the underside of the bridge was struck by a dump truck that was performing highway construction work below it on the eastbound lanes of the interstate on Wednesday night.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Capt. Travis Maze said the driver of a dump truck had dumped a load of materials at 9:41 p.m. and failed to lower the bed of the truck down and this part of the vehicle struck and damaged the bridge.
The interstate was closed for more than four hours due to the accident. It was reopened at 2:20 a.m. Thursday.
Maze said that at 12:15 a.m. Thursday, a state bridge inspector arrived at the scene to perform an inspection. The state officials returned later in the day to do a more thorough inspection and the bridge has since been closed.
“They have to do some more tests,” Maze said of the bridge, adding there is no update on when the bridge might reopen.
