A beautiful day!?

Editor, Daily Union: On July 11, I had a great day!

First, my honey pie and I went for a walk at Dorothy Carnes County Park, one of our favorite places. We noticed the beautiful flowers and remarked on the clouds floating in the blue sky. Our rescue pup, Golda My Ears, was chasing her cousin, Riley, through the tall grass! It was the best of days …

Then we went to the Hoard Historical Museum to hear the presentation by Fort Atkinson native John Wolfram, one of the men that fished the Apollo 11 astronauts out of the ocean. What an inspiration! And there was a full house of interested people! It was the best of days …

However, I noticed a man in the audience who was wearing a Trump 2020 hat. It began to throw some shade on my beautiful day.

After the presentation, I went up to him and introduced myself. I asked if he had a minute to talk. I said, “I noticed your hat. I want to do this as respectfully as I can, but I disagree with you. I’m interested in knowing why you think it would be a good idea to re-elect this man.”

He replied that he felt Trump was the best president we’ve had in 50 years, a real patriot. He’s done everything he said he would …

I then asked, “What do you think about climate change?”

He said, “It’s cyclical. It will take care of itself.” Not wanting to argue, I just shook my head and said, “I sure hope you’re right.” His wife was worriedly nodding her head beside him.

I have read recent accounts that Wisconsin might be the pivotal electoral state in the 2020 election. It is absolutely vital that we are informed and vote!

In evaluating President Trump’s record and whether he deserves your vote, I ask that you look at what he does rather than what he says.

As a climate change-denier, he recently has begun to say that his administration has done much to protect clean air and water. He has continually knocked our allies while praising strongman dictators. He said Mexico would pay for the wall. His administration has separated children from their families in detention centers that are a humanitarian disgrace. He is not the president for all of America; he is disrespecting women, members of the LGBTQ community and people of color. He claimed to “clean up the swamp,” but look at the scandals continually staining his picks for top posts in Washington!

It is absolutely vital that we are informed and vote!

I will openly state that I hope this man is not re-elected. That would be the worst of days … — Sincerely, Jim Marousis, Fort Atkinson.
