LAKE MILLS — The Lake Mills boys soccer team could earn a reputation as mudders if they keep playing in the rain the way they did last night.
The Lake Mills squad scored both its goals against Lodi in a heavy downpour, but it was the moments of clear weather that proved the home team’s undoing. The Blue Devils scored three goals in clear skies and mild fog to take a 3-2 win at Lake Mills High School.
Coach Jeff Hegstrom, the head girls soccer coach who was filling in for head boys coach Sam Fahsel, said after the fact that the team played a tough game in tougher conditions.
“The conditions kind of threw us off tonight,” he said. “The slick field made it harder to control the ball tonight.”
The game, scheduled for a 6:45 p.m. start, was delayed by 15 minutes due to lightning, but only rain was spotted during the match.
Lodi got on the board in the 31st minute when Shane Ness shuffled a shot past Lake Mills goalkeeper Connor Dean on an assist from Mitchell Figi.
The Blue Devils scored again early in the second half when Jared Volk punched one past Dean on an assist from Nathaniel Karls in the 48th minute.
Noah Mock sent a shot past Lodi keeper Kyle Mayberry in the 57th minute to get Lake Mills on the board. Sam Wolff helped John Wilke tie the game up at two in the 73rd minute.
A couple minutes later, the Blue Devils put the ball past Dean one last time, with Patrick Trelnen taking sole credit for the goal.
Lodi took nine shots at the goal, and its keeper, Mayberry, logged eight saves. In contrast, the L-Cats took 13 shots, and Dean had five saves.
Hegstrom seemed impressed overall with how the team performed.
“I think we got a little out of our game plan of trying to push the ball forward more, and I thought they adjusted nicely in the second half,” Hegstrom said. “At the end of the day, I think we played hard.”
The Cats will now wait to find out how they are seeded for regional play, which starts Oct. 18.
