BEAVER DAM — Fort Atkinson Post 166 gave up a pair of runs in the fifth inning and was defeated, 2-0, by Beaver Dam Post 146 in a ECAL baseball game on Tuesday night.
Beaver Dam did its damage against reliever Ben Koenig, who entered the game to start the fourth inning. Koenig gave up a one-out walk and a single to open the door for Post 146. The runners advanced on an error by the shortstop and scored the first run of the game on a ground-ball to shortstop.
Wesley Biel hit a double to center field to finish off the rally and take a 2-0 lead, which held up.
Eight of the last nine batters were retired in order for Fort Atkinson. Ryan Hartman was hit by a pitch with two outs in the seventh inning, but lead-off hitter Isaac Heederik lined out to center field to end the game.
Fort Atkinson had two runners on in the first, third and fourth innings but were unable to scrape a run across.
Fort Atkinson starter Cody Zahn escaped a mess of his own in the second and third inning when he loaded the bases in each frame. He escaped both jams.
Post 166 will continue its season at the Waupun tournament June 14-15. The first game of the tournament will take place against Waupun at Thompson Field beginning at 7:30 p.m.
